When I opened my business 5 years ago, I started with a really simple website. I used a template provided by my website provider and just changed the wording to fit my business. I was proud of myself that I was able to do that. But after five years, I decided it was time to learn WordPress. I took a few on-line classes. I read lots of articles. I even spoke to a WordPress expert. I gathered as much information as I could before taking the leap.
I bought a theme that was designed to do what I wanted it to do. Again, I read all the instructions and articles. I was able to change colors, change fonts, add pictures, add columns and buttons. I was very proud of myself.
There is one thing in particular that I am proud of – I was able to figure out how to move my WordPress.com blog over to my new WordPress.org site. For WordPress experts, that is not something hard to do. But I am not a particularly teckie person, so I was happy that I figured it out. I didn’t want to lose five years of blogging.
My site is not finished. There are a few things I still want to do. My header picture is too big. My logo is not transparent. My blog is not highlighted on the home page. It is a work in progress and always will be. But at least I understand WordPress a bit more. I can handle the odd update from a client. I can add blog posts or fix typos if a client needs that done. I will never offer WordPress site building to my list of services. That I will leave to the experts. But at least I can say I know a bit about website building.
