Facebook – Can You Teach An Old Dog New Tricks?

My mother-in-law asked us the other day about Facebook.   We decided to take on the challenge of setting up an account and teaching her how to use it.  We didn’t realize how much of a challenge this would be.

For most people, Facebook is very easy to comprehend.  You “friend” someone you know and then communicate with them.   If you have a business, you probably have an additional page where you connect with your client base.  Learning Facebook is not really a big deal.  It is just something that you do.  No so when you are 83 years old.

When you are 83 years old it is very difficult to comprehend the fact that you are talking to every one of your friends at the same time.  It is the “social” aspect of Facebook that was not teachable.  This is not an email program like my mother-in-law thought.  After teaching her how to delete her post so certain people will not see what she wrote, I think she now understands.

Evidently I am not alone in this endeavor.  There are a lot of you teaching your older family members how to use this particular platform.  Whether it is for staying in touch with family members or playing games, you can teach an old dog new tricks, but you must do so with a lot of patience.  It can be very frustrating, as you probably know.  So go easy.  Teach the social aspect of it first and hopefully you will have better luck than we did.

Have you tried to teach an older family member about Facebook?  What stories or tips would you like to share?  We could all use your help to make it easier on our older generation.
